Operation Tomodachi (トモダチ作戦 tomodachi sakusen?, lit. Operation Friend(s)) is a United States Armed Forces assistance operation to support Japan in disaster relief following the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. As of 29 March 2011, the operation, including relief supplies provided to victims of the disaster, was expected to cost a total of $80 million.

The disaster may have also brought a diplomatic opening to Japan. The support provided by the US illustrated the value of the relationship between the two countries. It was commented that the level of support provided by the US for relief operations will probably assuage tension over base relocations disputes between the governments of the two nations.The Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the “coordinated relief activities at the disaster sites are expected to deepen the Japan-U.S. alliance.”

On 4 April 2011, Japan’s minister of defense, Toshimi Kitazawa, accompanied by US ambassador to Japan John Roos, visited the Ronald Reagan to thank its crew for its assistance as part of Operation Tomodachi. Said Kitazawa, “I have never been more encouraged by and proud of the fact that the United States is our ally.”

アメリカが空母を出しての日本への救援プログラムの名前が「Operation Tomodachi」とのことです。いいネーミングですよね。世界が急速に繋がって狭くなっている中、みんな誰かの知り合いやその知り合いです。そんなか、アメリカからも友達を助けようと手を差し伸べてくれる名前なのに、感動しました。

Facebookやtwitterで繋がっている人が増える時代。コミュニケーションが国を超える時代。そして、個人と個人がどんどん繋がっていく時代だからこそ、世界の人からの心配や応援の声が聞こえてきてすごく嬉しい。お互いがいがみ合うのではなく、個人という弱い存在同士が、相手を思いやって応援し支えあえると本当に実感しました。

こうやって東京で、直接の被害は何も受けていませんが、仙台出身者にとっては、世界からメッセージが寄せられて、手を差し伸べてもらえているということが、当事者として本当にうれしいのです。

今回のことで、もう一歩価値観のシフトが進みそうです。「自分だけよければ・・・」なんてもう興味ない。経済のゲームへの興味も一気に減退しました。自分のメリットとかもうどうでもよくなってきそう。お互いが助け合って、手助けしあって、暮らしていく社会により移行しそうです。あと、エコも節電も。ファッションとかじゃなく、「痛み分け」としての節電。自分ができる「お裾分け」として。

個人的には、今は節電と募金しかできていませんが、この危機が終わった後も東北地方の復興は時間がかかるはずです。東北地方の復興のために、何かアクションをしていこうと決めました。微力ですが、復興のお手伝いになるような仕掛けをやっていきます。
